Once a year the Eindhoven University of Technology presents itself to the outside world via the so-called SuperTU/esday. On February 11th, 2010, the theme was Digital Security.
Everyone realizes that internet banking is possible only because of digital protection techniques. It is less well known that cell phones make use of these techniques too, while the phones' impact is much bigger and ever growing.
Digital security is about more than just technical aspects; think of legal, social, economical and even psychological aspects. The organisation is therefore very happy that various companies, and also the universities of Tilburg and Nijmegen, have helped to fill in the SuperTU/esday program.
The intended audience too reflects the breadth of the subject: large and smaller (SME) companies in the region, (semi-)governmental institutions, TU/e alumni, but also the general public and the last classes of pre university education could select their day program. The program comprised Dutch spoken and English spoken parts.
There was more entertainment than just the talks. The Scryption museum, specialising in all aspects of written communication, had an exhibition on the TU/e campus for the whole week, displaying all kinds of historic crypto systems and coding machinery. The National Bureau for Signals Protection (NBV), a Dutch "secret service", has shown devices and code books from the past. Among others, a real Enigma has been on display on this day.
